What to Do in an Emergency Situation
If you are experiencing a dental emergency, first and foremost, call our office at (503) 305-5051. Once your appointment is scheduled, we recommend that you take an over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol or ibuprofen to help alleviate any pain you may be experiencing.
You should never touch a tooth that is injured, loose, or damaged, as this can cause more damage to the area and exacerbate the pain you are feeling.
If you are experiencing severe pain, in addition to taking medication, you can place a cold pack on your cheek to help reduce swelling. Swishing warm salty water also helps to prevent infection in the area.
If you have a tooth knocked out, it is important that you recover the tooth immediately. If there is dirt or debris all over the tooth, you can rinse it off, but do not scrub it or remove tissues attached to the tooth. You also want to avoid touching the roots. Place the tooth back into your mouth or, if that’s not possible, you can place it in a container filled with milk or saliva.
